What is RAID and how to set it up

When you see the term RAID, it usually refers to a protected set of inexpensive drives.

This term originated when voluminous hard drives were very expensive.

Then, it was cheaper to assemble one common array from several smaller disks.

Oddly enough, the essence of this device has remained the same, only with much greater potential.

Each RAID has its own serial number and level.

Most likely, you have heard about them: RAID 0, 1 ... 10, etc.

RAID can provide not only greater performance, but also high fault tolerance for hard drives.

And also, the concept of RAID is convenient for your data: you need not back up data, since data loss and corruption are clearly monitored and eliminated in a timely manner.

How to choose a RAID setup

Each RAID option has its own characteristics, so the choice of a particular RAID depends on your preference. Consider the most common arrays to date:

RAID 0: it is also called a high-speed array, as it only increases speed. You need at least 2 hard drives, and the data will be simultaneously written to both; this means that you get 2 times faster read / write speed. Of course, this is in theory; in practice such speed is not always achieved. As for the minuses, this includes a lack of reliability: if one disk fails, you will not get access to the data on the second disk, as it will be lost.

RAID 1: here they have already taken care of data reliability. If a disk breakdown occurs, the second remains intact with all the data. Reliability does not decrease. RAID 1 does not affect the speed, but the volume; you have only half of the total disk space, which, by the way, in RAID 1 can be 2, 4, etc.; that is, an even number.

RAID 5 consists of five or more disks. As always, one of the disks will store the information necessary for recovery. By the way, recovery is possible here, but it takes a lot of time, up to several days. As for read speed and performance, there is no question: they are quite high and this array is widely used now.

RAID 10, or as it is also called, 1 + 0, combines all the best aspects of the previous types. The minimum number of disks is 4, and this is how they work: data is written in parallel to two disks, and the third and fourth disks duplicate this data. The result is that speed increases twofold, but also the volume is only that of two of the four disks of the array. As for recovery, it happens quite quickly. Thus, this type of array is popular among large companies.

What do you need to set up RAID

Setup

A RAID can be created for both hardware and software. More common is for software, since hardware is done by connecting several HDDs to the motherboard of a computer that supports this technology. A controller built into the motherboard does not have good reliability.

So, here is how to set up a RAID: first you need to get at least two identical hard drives. They should be the same not only in terms of features, but also in terms of manufacturer and model. Next, transfer all data from your HDD to other media if you do not want them to be lost.

In the search bar, type “Disk Spaces” and click OK. Next, select “Create a new pool” and then select the best RAID setup of the future array. After the process is complete, you can trace your array in the Manage Storage Spaces section.
